Power distribution

Feeders, subpanels, transformers and dedicated circuits that carry power to where your business uses it, sized for the equipment.

Power distribution is how electricity gets from your main service to the places it’s used. In a commercial building that can include switchboards, feeders, subpanels, transformers and the circuits for machinery and equipment.

When a business adds equipment, rearranges a shop floor or expands into more space, the distribution system often has to change with it. A subpanel near the equipment, a transformer for a different voltage or a new feeder can solve problems that adding circuits to the main panel can’t.

How it works

We look at your service and distribution, the equipment you run and what you’re planning. Then we lay out how power should be routed and give you a written estimate before any work starts.

Distribution work often means shutting down part or all of the building. We plan shutdowns with you in advance, and they can often be scheduled after hours or on a weekend. Permits and inspections are usually part of the job, and we coordinate with the utility where needed.

Signs you need it

When to give us a call.

Any of these is a good reason to have us take a look.

01

Adding heavy equipment

Machinery, compressors, welders and commercial ovens often need their own feeder or subpanel.

02

Equipment needs a different voltage

Some equipment runs on a voltage your building doesn’t have, and a transformer can supply it.

03

Long runs to equipment

Equipment far from the panel can suffer voltage drop on a long circuit.

04

Expanding into more space

An addition or an extra unit needs power brought to it from the existing service.

05

A crowded main panel

Moving loads to a subpanel can free up room and make circuits easier to manage.

06

Moving equipment around

Rearranging a shop floor or production line usually means moving the power that feeds it.

How is this different from a panel upgrade?

+
A panel upgrade deals with the panel and the service. Distribution work covers how power gets from there to the rest of the building through feeders, subpanels and transformers.

Can you add power for one new machine?

+
Yes. We check the machine’s requirements and what your service can supply, then run the circuit, disconnect or subpanel it needs.

Our new equipment needs three-phase power and we only have single-phase. What can we do?

+
Sometimes the utility can bring three-phase service to the building, and we coordinate that where needed. Other options depend on the equipment, and we’ll go over them with you.

Will we have to shut down?

+
Usually for part of the job. We plan shutdowns with you ahead of time and can often schedule them outside business hours.

Do you charge for estimates?

+
No. You get a free, written estimate before any work starts.
