Panel upgrades

Replace an old or overloaded electrical panel so your home can safely run everything you use today.

Your electrical panel feeds every circuit in your home. Many older homes still have panels sized for far less than a household uses now, with central air, an electric range, a second fridge, a hot tub or an EV charger all drawing from it.

When the panel can’t keep up, breakers trip, lights dim when something big starts, and there’s no room to add a circuit. A panel upgrade replaces it with a new panel sized for your home, and often increases the electrical service coming in from the power company as well.

How it works

We start by looking at your current panel and what you run now or plan to add. Then we explain your options and give you a written estimate before any work starts.

A service upgrade usually also involves a permit, an inspection, and the power company disconnecting and reconnecting your service. We’ll walk you through what your job needs and schedule the work so you’re without power for as short a time as possible.

Signs you need it

When to give us a call.

Any of these is a good reason to have us take a look.

01

Breakers trip often

Tripping when two appliances run at once usually means the panel or a circuit is overloaded.

02

Lights dim or flicker

Lights that dip when the AC or a big appliance starts can point to a panel at its limit.

03

No room for new circuits

An EV charger, generator, hot tub or addition needs free space and capacity in the panel.

04

An old fuse box or panel

If your panel is decades old or still uses fuses, it’s worth having it checked.

05

Heat, buzzing or a burning smell

A panel that’s warm, buzzing or scorched needs attention right away, so call us.

06

A remodel or addition

Renovations often add enough load to need more capacity than the panel has.

How do I know if I need a panel upgrade?

+
Breakers that trip often, lights that flicker, no space for new circuits or an old fuse box are the usual signs. We can look at your panel and tell you whether an upgrade makes sense.

What size panel does my home need?

+
It depends on the size of your home and what you run. Many homes today have a 200-amp service, but we size it to your actual and planned use.

Do I need a new panel for an EV charger?

+
Not always. A Level 2 charger needs its own circuit, and if your panel has the space and capacity, no upgrade is needed. We check before recommending one.

How long will the power be off?

+
It depends on the job and, for a service upgrade, on the power company’s schedule. We’ll tell you what to expect with your estimate.

Is the estimate free?

+
Yes. You get a free, written estimate before any work starts.
