Troubleshooting

We find the cause of tripping breakers, flickering lights, dead circuits and electrical problems that keep coming back.

Some electrical problems don’t have an obvious cause. A breaker trips once a week, half a room goes dead, or the lights flicker only on windy days. Problems like these take testing to track down, and the fault is often somewhere other than where it shows up.

Troubleshooting is how we figure out what’s actually wrong. We test circuits, trace wiring, open up boxes and check connections at the panel, narrowing it down until we find the source.

How it works

It helps to know what you’ve noticed before we arrive, such as when it happens, which outlets or lights are affected, and whether anything changed recently. On site, we test the affected circuits and work back toward the problem.

When we find the cause, we show you what we found and explain what it will take to fix. You get a written estimate for the repair before we do it.

Signs you need it

When to give us a call.

Any of these is a good reason to have us take a look.

01

A breaker that keeps tripping

Repeated trips mean something on the circuit is wrong, even when nothing seems to be running.

02

Part of the house lost power

Losing a few rooms or half the house can point to a loose connection in the panel or on the service.

03

Flickering in one area

Flicker limited to one room or circuit often traces back to a loose connection.

04

Outlets dead with no tripped breaker

A dead run of outlets usually means a failed connection somewhere along the circuit.

05

A GFCI that trips often

Frequent GFCI trips can come from moisture, a damaged cord or a wiring fault.

06

A tingle or shock

Feeling a tingle from an appliance, faucet or switch plate needs checking right away.

FAQ

Troubleshooting questions.

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

+
The usual causes are an overloaded circuit, a short or a ground fault. Testing tells us which one it is and where.

Should I keep resetting the breaker?

+
If it trips again right away or keeps tripping, stop resetting it. Leave it off and call us.

Half my house went dead. What should I check?

+
Look for a tripped main or breakers first. If nothing has tripped, call your power company, since the problem can be on their side. If their side is fine, call us.

Can you find problems that come and go?

+
Yes, though intermittent problems can take longer to pin down. Notes on when it happens help a lot.

What happens after you find the cause?

+
We explain it and give you a written estimate for the repair. You decide whether to go ahead.
